An Invitation to the Reader

Statistically Blogger tells me that people are reading this blog, so I am extending you readers an invitation.  If there is something in Hawaii (oh Oahu) that you are dying to know about, let me know.  If it doesn't cost an arm and a leg (preferrably if it's my favorite price, FREE!) I will do what I can to find out and/or experience what it is you want to know about.

So go ahead readers!  Make your requests!

  1. This is a very kind invitation but no way am I going to ask you to do me any favors when it seems you have enough to struggle with. The reason I'm commenting is that I too am thinking about the Hawaii move. I have lived in Canada all my life, the first 30 years in one of the coldest cities. I am fed up with compromise; we are having a hard enough time finding employment here anyway (and my wife and I are both college educated), and I have always tried to be of the "we know not the day nor the hour, try to live as you would really wish to" school.

So what I would most like to see is updates on your poor little son's troubles (noting that my own so in grade 2 has to deal with bullies as well, it's "just" a global problem I hope) and anything else that will let us know how your adventure is proceeding. I wish you all the best, much aloha.

  2. But if you REALLY want to do me a favor, you could always post a pic of the Upside Down Falls near the Pali... :)

  3. Hey Brother Michael! As you can see, I have not looked at the blog for a while. We are still in Hawaii, we are still struggling. I suppose it is difficult to live anywhere that you do not have ties. In all honesty, a big part of our struggle has to do with the fact that we are "haole". No mincing words, white people are generally not loved here (and for historically appropriate reasons). But as a haole, it is very frustrating... I come from California, and I am use to diversity. I am use to the good, the bad and the ugly that come with it. I am not use to being thought ill of everywhere I go. It's a hard thing to get use to. As for my son, he is on summer break. Sadly he has no real friends here, yet. We are contemplating a new school. We are also contemplating a move. THings in the U.S. are very difficult job wise, so if your primary reason to move is to find work you might think again. It took me 4 months of solid searching to find a job, and after almost a year my wife still has not found full time work. Being haole makes getting work that much harder. Generally, locals are favored for jobs of all types. I don't necessarily want to discourage you, but unless you have a)a sizeable nest egg or b) someone to live with until you find work, I would seriously weigh your options. It might be better to move when things are more stable economy wise, when jobs are growing instead of withering away. From what I hear, Canada is a much better place to be right now, economy wise. But things change. Maybe saving money in anticipation of that possibility might be a good option. Of course, who am I to give advice? Afterall, we are thinking of moving yet again!
